Mono Printing at Zygote Press
Print day in August with Artist, Sarah Royer. Images inspired by my favourites from The Cleveland Museum of Art. Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’ cast in bronze and Egyptian ‘Shawabtys’ terracotta figures.
One of Auguste Rodin’s most famous works, The Thinker was part of a commission for the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. Although the museum was never built, the commission for the doors, titled The Gates of Hell, was begun, but never completed. The Gates of Hell is considered one of Rodin’s masterworks.
The Egyptian vision of the afterlife was one spent performing agricultural tasks in service of the gods. To avoid having to serve personally, the deceased person could hire a substitute work to act on his or her behalf. Made in the image of their owner, these tiny statuettes, called shawabtys, magically fulfilled the owner’s obligations, and in the process, allowed him or her to enjoy an afterlife of peace and relaxation.

Recycled Archaeology: Artist Commission
As an Artist I was asked to experiment making art pieces with the recycled collections considering the future of sustainability for deaccessioned heritage objects.
Invited by Marley Treloar (current PHD) and Dr. Helen Wickstead, founder of Recycle Archaeology.
Recycle Archaeology saves archaeological artefacts that can’t find a permanent home in museums and would otherwise go to landfill. Recycle Archaeology gives these unwanted treasures away to schools, communities, and makers, making heritage accessible to all.
The Recycled Artefacts I was given are from a Putney Bridge dig, 1979. The objects are slag, a by-product in the iron ore process, when making these nails discarded into the river. Some date back to medieval times.
Inspired by the links to the building of the Putney Bridge (the second oldest bridge), my images are meant to give homage to the simple nail which without the bridges couldn’t be built. These little nails help construct the first wooden bridge and later the wooden scaffolding to build the stone bridge (currently standing). Building with the many little objects – discarded and forgotten – to now being used to make the ink I use in this print series: ‘Homage to nails that bind us’.
Series available for purchase: email me for enquiries.
